Search for a "suit for women" in India and you will mostly see salwar and kurta suits. This guide is about the other kind: the western formal suit, a tailored blazer worn with matching trousers. Here is what each type is called, how they differ, and which one to buy first.
Ethnic suit vs western formal suit
In Indian fashion, a suit or suit set usually means a kurta worn with salwar, churidar or palazzo, often with a dupatta. A western formal suit is a different garment: a structured blazer with matching formal trousers, cut for offices, interviews and business events. Both can be formal. They are simply different dress codes, and many professional women wear both.
The main types of western formal suits
Pant suit
A blazer and matching trousers in the same fabric and colour. This is the most common western suit for women and the most versatile: wear it together for meetings, or split it into separates. Example: the White Single-Breasted Gold-Button Pant Suit Set.
Blazer suit set
Another name for a pant suit, used by many Indian brands, including us. Browse the full blazer suit sets edit.
Power suit
A pant suit with stronger structure: defined shoulders, a sharper lapel and often a double-breasted front. It is designed to look authoritative in boardrooms and on stage. See power suits for women, such as the Black Pinstripe Double-Breasted Pant Suit Set.
3-piece suit
A blazer, a waistcoat and trousers. In western formal wear, the third piece is the waistcoat, not a dupatta. Wear all three for formal events, or the waistcoat and trousers alone on warm days. Try the Navy Blue Double-Breasted 3-Piece Pant Suit Set or browse 3-piece suit sets.
Tuxedo suit
An evening suit with satin or contrast lapels, worn for black-tie events, award nights and receptions. Example: the Black Double-Breasted Tuxedo Pant Suit Set.
Skirt suit and blazer dress
A blazer with a matching skirt, or a dress cut like a blazer. Both carry the authority of a suit in a different silhouette. See blazer dresses.
Single-breasted or double-breasted?
Single-breasted blazers have one column of buttons. They look good worn open, suit most body types and work for everyday office wear. Double-breasted blazers overlap at the front with two columns of buttons. They look more formal and structured and are best worn buttoned for presentations, interviews and events.
Which suit to buy first
Start with one pant suit in a neutral colour: black, navy, beige or grey. It covers interviews, client meetings and everyday office wear, and the blazer and trousers re-wear with everything else you own. Add a statement colour second, and a 3-piece or tuxedo suit when you need one for events. If you are not sure which colour suits your workplace, read our guide to office suit colours.
How a western suit should fit
Shoulder seams should end at your shoulder bone. The blazer should button without pulling into an X-shaped crease, and sleeves should end at the wrist bone. High-waisted trousers should sit at your natural waist without a gap at the back. Our blazer and suit size guide shows how to measure in three minutes. Every Beyond Formals suit is made in sizes XS to 4XL, blazer and trouser sizes can be chosen separately, and custom measurements are available.
